How should you read law firm reviews?

  • Use more than one source. Reviews on a firm's own website, on search engines and on legal directories each show a different slice of client experience.
  • Look for specifics. Comments about who kept the client updated, how questions were answered and whether the process was explained tell you more than a star count.
  • Check the dates. Recent reviews reflect how a firm works now.
  • Look for patterns. One glowing or one angry review means less than a theme that repeats across many.
  • Separate service from outcome. A review describes one person's experience; the result of any case depends on its own facts.
  • Confirm the basics. Make sure any lawyer you hire is admitted to practice in New York and that the fee terms are in writing.

What does New York's attorney advertising rule say about client reviews?

New York's Rules of Professional Conduct are found in 22 NYCRR Part 1200. By a joint order dated May 27, 2026, the Presiding Justices of the four Departments of the Appellate Division amended the advertising rules, effective June 1, 2026. The amended Rule 7.1 states that a lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services. Under the rule, a communication is false or misleading if it contains a material misrepresentation of fact or law, or omits a fact necessary to make the statement considered as a whole not materially misleading.

Before the amendments, Rule 7.1 required an ad containing testimonials of clients or former clients to be factually supported and accompanied by the statement "Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome." The amended Rule 7.1 does not contain that requirement. This page still places that statement directly after the client excerpts.

The Awards page of William Mattar, P.C. lists recognitions including:
