Where it all Started: The Legend of St. Patrick’s Day:
According to the History Channel, March 17, is the anniversary of St. Patrick’s death in the fifth century. For over 1,000 years, the Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday. As the Patron Saint of Ireland, the mythology surrounding his life has become ingrained in the Irish culture. One myth is that he explained the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of an Irish clover, the shamrock.
With a large immigration of Irish to America, many St. Patrick’s Day customs were created and sustained in the United States. If you’ve enjoyed parades, green beer, green bagels, and other green-themed treats on March 17th, you’ve participated in some of the American customs.
Historically, blue was the traditional color associated with Ireland’s patron saint prior to the 1798 Irish Rebellion.
