There is still no known cure or effective treatment for Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The following facts about the disease were issued by the ALS Association:
- Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes someone loses their battle to this fatal disease.
- The average life span after diagnosis is 2-5 years.
- Military veterans are twice as likely as the general population to die from ALS.
- Living with ALS can cost more than $200,000 per year.
This progressive disease of the brain’s motor neurons leads to loss of motor skills, and in late stages, paralysis.
