Each year, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) participates in National Seat Check Saturday to promote child passenger safety. The GTSC partners with local and state agencies to host car seat check events throughout New York State.

What is National Seat Check Saturday?

At these events, parents and guardians may sign up for car seat inspections and receive valuable child passenger safety information.

According to the GTSC, “the goal [of National Seat Check Saturday] is to make sure that children are in the correct car seat, that seats are properly installed and used, and that seats are registered with its manufacturer to ensure parents and caregivers receive important safety updates.”

This link provides an up-to-date schedule that lists New York State car seat check events, many of which occurring on Saturday, September 24.

Make Sure You Have the Correct Child Safety Seat

It is important that parents and guardians select an appropriate child safety seat for their children and recommendations provided by the seat’s manufacturers, including weight and height restrictions and requirements. Seats and restraint systems must always be certified according to Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard 213.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, among other things, an appropriate child safety seat:

  • is required for all children until their eighth birthday;
  • has to meet height and weight requirements;
  • may be a car seat, harness, vest, or a booster seat attached with the seat belt system;
  • should not be used in the front seat; and
  • must be installed correctly according to package instructions.

Parents and guardians must always comply with applicable laws and ensure that the child safety seat is used correctly at all times.
