The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently released a list of projects it feels would be most beneficial to highway safety. ABC 7 News reports that the agency’s list called for better technology to prevent crashes and impaired driving. Also, the agency would like to see more done to prevent distracted driving accidents. Despite adopting one of the toughest pieces of legislation against drunk driving when it enacted Leandra’s Law, drunk driving in New York is still a major problem. In 2008, more than 25,000 motorists were arrested for drunken driving in New York, with some of those drivers causing Buffalo Car Accidents. Roughly one-third of those arrested were repeat offenders. Statistics like these are why the NTSB is calling for the mandatory use of ignition interlock, personal alcohol monitoring devices, and other safety technology in offenders’ vehicles. Wireless technology may also be beneficial in preventing distracted driving accidents. The NTSB has called for more phone applications to prevent the use of cellular devices while driving. Cutting edge wireless technology is also being used for vehicles to communicate with other cars and roadway infrastructure to prevent accidents.
