Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage?  Uninsured motorist coverage  protects drivers injured in accidents, such as hit-and-runs or those involving uninsured drivers.   By law, all vehicles registered in New York must have uninsured-motorist (“UM”) coverage of at least $25,000/$50,000 per person/accident. New York motorists have the option of also buying “underinsurance” coverage to guard against the possibility of injury caused by someone who is “underinsured,” meaning that he or she has insufficient coverage to fully compensate the injured party. This is called supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist (“SUM”) coverage.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists

Uninsured drivers can be found on New York roads. An estimated 4.1% of motorists on New York roads are not insured. Many others carry the minimum-required bodily injury liability policy of $25,000/$50,000 per person per accident, meaning they may lack sufficient coverage to fully compensate the injured person.

If you’re involved in an accident caused by someone with little or no insurance, SUM coverage can provide an important source of compensation.
