William Mattar’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Campaign 

In support of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, in May, William Mattar, P.C. launched its Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Campaign, encouraging drivers to be extremely cautious as motorcyclists head back onto New York roads this spring. 

As the weather warms and the days lengthen, many motorcyclists take to the roads to enjoy the freedom and thrill of riding. With more motorcycles on the road, however, comes a greater risk of accidents. That’s why May is recognized as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  The month-long observance serves as a reminder to all drivers to share the road and take necessary precautions to keep motorcyclists safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2018 motorcyclists were 27 times likelier to die in a crash than are occupants of cars. In 2021, 5,932 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes in the United States, amounting to 14 percent of all traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That was the most killed since 1975.  

Per vehicle miles traveled in 2021, motorcyclists were four times likelier than occupants of passenger vehicles to be injured in a crash.

• motorist awareness of motorcycles; 
• sober motorcycle operation; 
• rider-safety methods; and

Motorcyclists can also take steps to increase their own safety. This includes wearing proper protective gear, such as a helmet and other protective clothing, staying alert and focused on the road, and obeying traffic laws.
