Warnings Issued to Prevent Car Accidents Caused by School Traffic

With school beginning again in New York, motorists can expect to see numerous changes in traffic patterns to accommodate school buses, bicycles, and children walking to school. Concerns over these risks have prompted several local police departments to issue warnings to drivers about the changes in traffic they may experience. According to an article from The Observer, the Dunkirk Police Department has issued such a set of warnings aimed at protecting the public from the dangers of motor vehicle collisions.

Officers are reminding motorists that the speed limit in school zones is 15 mph between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. when school is in session. School zones are located within the immediate vicinity of an educational complex. A spokesperson for the department stated officers would be on hand during the first several days of school to ensure motorists are obeying speed limits.

Students are also being warned to be wary when crossing streets on their way to school and to always obey the directions of crossing guards in their areas.
