Two Types of New York Car Insurance You Should Know About Uninsured Motorists In New York Data from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles shows there were more than 835 New York car accidents per day in 2013. While all vehicles in the state are required by law to be covered by insurance, around seven percent of motorists don’t adhere to these rules and drive uninsured cars, trucks, or motorcycles. If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, there are two types of insurance that can help you: no-fault insurance, which can cover medical bills, lost wages and miscellaneous expenses, and supplemental uninsured motorist (UM) coverage which provide coverage for your serious injuries. What’s No-Fault Insurance? Article 51 of the New York Insurance Law says no-fault insurance—also known as personal injury protection (PIP)—provides compensation to a driver to cover their expenses after an accident, regardless of who is at fault for the accident. The policy normally covers up to $50,000 dollars in expenses, such as medical bills, lost wages, and other everyday expenses. However, policies can be adjusted to provide more coverage if an individual chooses. Supplemental Uninsured Motorist Coverage A supplemental uninsured motorist insurance policy can provide compensation to an accident victim if their expenses exceed the $50,000 provided by no-fault insurance. Battling The Insurance Company While having enough insurance is crucial, it’s often a struggle to be fairly compensated by an insurer in the event of an accident. This is why it’s important to have legal representation when trying to reach a fair settlement after an accident. Hurt In A Car?
