Safety Officials Call for Changes to Child Safety Seat Installation Devices

Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of eight. However, these devices can be extremely difficult to properly install.

This problem has prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make several changes to its standards and regulations automotive manufacturers must adhere to when designing child seat installation devices for vehicles. A story from WGRZ 2 News states the agency is calling for the lower anchors and tethers for child safety seats, known as LATCH systems, to not be used in vehicles if the combined weight of the child and seat is more than 65 pounds. If the weight is any more, the seat should be installed using the vehicle’s seat belt.

The seats will now be required to carry new warning labels as well.

Anyone questioning whether or not their child’s safety seat is properly installed is encouraged to visit the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, local police or fire departments, or the New York State Police for a free inspection.
