New York Creates “Texting Stops” to Prevent Distracted Driving Accidents

The New York Car Accident Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices claim that one of the greatest dangers motorists on New York highways face today are distracted drivers. Estimates show that in 2011, a total of 3,331 people lost their lives and approximately 387,000 others were injured as the result of motor vehicle collisions caused by distraction while at the wheel.

These numbers prompted state lawmakers to enact legislation banning the use of handheld electronic devices while driving, which created some of the strictest regulations against texting and driving in the nation.

The laws have proven ineffective though. The number of tickets issued for infractions continues to climb each year along with the number of accidents attributed to distracted driving.

Now, state officials have adopted a different approach to help keep motorists safe. According to an article from WGRZ 2 News, Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced the state would install more than 300 signs along the state thruway alerting drivers of 90 “Text Stops”. These are areas where motorists can pull over along the highway to make a call or send a message.

William Mattar’s team of New York Personal Injury Lawyers is hopeful drivers will take advantage of the stops in an effort to keep themselves and others safe while traveling in New York.
