Law Enforcement and Legislators Work to Take Drunk Drivers Off the Road

A growing number of motorists are being arrested for drunken driving, and the arrest rates are traditionally higher during the holidays. As a result, lawmakers and law enforcement are focusing on taking dangerous drivers off the road.

An article from WIVB4 News pointed out that the New York State Police arrested a total of six intoxicated drivers over the weekend. All of the arrests were made along Interstate 190 after troopers observed the drivers commit other violations. Four of the stops involved moving violations, while another driver was arrested following a Buffalo Car Accident. Troopers say citizens can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence along the state’s highways as the holidays approach.

While New York law enforcement works to take drunk drivers off the road locally, the National Transportation Safety Board is making moves to do the same on a national level. The agency is suggesting that every state require convicted drunk drivers, including first-time offenders, to have an ignition interlock system installed on their vehicles. The push comes after research found the devices effective in preventing offenders from committing multiple offenses.

The Buffalo Car Accident Attorneys with William Mattar Law Offices are happy to see so much work being put into taking drunk drivers off the road, and hope that both programs will be successful in helping to eliminate drunk drivers from the road.
