Department of Transportation Cautions Drivers as Winter Storm Approaches

With a massive winter storm preparing to sweep across the western half of the state, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is asking motorists to use caution when traveling through areas where snow and ice are accumulating on roads. An article from The Post-Standard offered some details as to what the state is doing to keep roads clear, while also giving safety tips to drivers.

NYSDOT has roughly 400 plow trucks that will be dispensing salt brine along roads to help keep winter weather from building up. But these efforts may not be enough to prevent an accident from occurring, and that is where experts say a driver’s behavior behind the wheel matters.

Officials say the best way to avoid a New York Car Accident in winter weather conditions is to postpone travel during snowy or icy conditions. If you must venture out though, it is important to remember to plan ahead, slow down, and give plenty of space to other vehicles.

Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and be aware of road conditions before stepping into the vehicle. Once driving, travel below posted speed limits and always leave at least two to three car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you.
