Chrysler Recalls Jeeps Due to Risk of Defective Car Design Accidents

Each year, faulty equipment on vehicles is responsible for numerous crashes causing injury or death. To reduce the number of Defective Car Design Accidents, the Chrysler Corporation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a recall of roughly three million older model Jeeps due to flaws with the vehicles’ gas tanks.

According to a story from WIVB 4 News, the NHTSA had asked Chrysler to recall all 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2003 to 2007 Jeep Liberties earlier this month after the agency received several reports of the vehicles’ plastic gas tank rupturing in high-speed rear-end collisions. The cracked tanks allow fuel to spill, which can create fire and explosion hazards. So far, 51 people have been killed and dozens have been injured as a result of such accidents.

Chrysler initially refused to launch the recall on the vehicles. However, the company conceded the problems recently by stating they would have qualified inspectors examine each recalled vehicle. Those inspectors will also install upgrades, such as steel reinforcements around the tank, to prevent dangers in the event of a crash.
