Feb. 18, 2013 Many citizens of the Buffalo area are concerned over the large number of drunk drivers being arrested, especially those who have prior Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) convictions. A story from WIVB 4 News discussed the reasoning form these concerns and what is being done to put a stop to drunk driving. Data shows that around 3,500 people are arrested in Erie County for DWI offenses every year, and approximately 1,000 of those individuals have faced similar charges in the past. These individuals are also responsible for causing a disproportionate number of Buffalo Car Accidents. The district attorney maintains that his office shows no leniency on drunk drivers. In fact, they do not offer plea bargains to drunken drivers if the driver has been arrested on the charge before, injured someone in an accident, or had a blood alcohol level of more than .13 percent when arrested. But the numbers tell a different tale. Erie County ranks 40th among the state’s 62 counties when it comes to convicting drunk drivers, with only 42 percent of those charged facing convictions. Niagara County is in even worse shape, only convicting 30 percent of those charged with DUI. The Buffalo Injury Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices know the dangers drunk drivers present to the public, and they may be able to help if you have been injured in an accident caused by someone who was under the influence.
