Sept. 17, 2012 Since enacting Leandra’s Law several years ago, New York State has some of the toughest drunk driving laws in the nation. The law makes driving under the influence with a passenger under the age of 15 a felony offense. It was created after an 11-year-old girl was killed and six other children were injured in an Oct. 2009 rollover accident caused by an impaired adult. According to an article from WGRZ 2 News, last week a 40-year-old woman from Pavilion, New York, was charged with violating the law a second time following a rollover accident. The state police say they found an abandoned vehicle in Covington, New York, and tracked the owner to a nearby home. They then discovered an intoxicated woman and a young child inside the home, both of whom were injured. They were both taken to a local hospital and the woman was arrested for allegedly driving the vehicle at the time of the Buffalo car accident immediately after being discharged from the facility. The arrest comes less than three months after the woman was charged with violating Leandra’s Law in June after being found under the influence in a parking lot with the child in her vehicle. The Car Accident Injury Lawyers with the William Mattar Law Offices applaud local law enforcement for their dedication to keeping drunk drivers off the road.
