Sept. 26, 2012 A recent survey conducted in Rochester found the city’s residents tend to text and drive more than people in other American cities. According to an article published by the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, these statistics could mean serious danger for drivers in the city. Surveys were submitted by 800 Rochester residents, and showed that 25 percent of respondents admitted to texting and driving in the past month, versus an average of 18 percent in other cities. Younger motorists between the ages of 18 and 44 showed the highest texting rates, with 42 percent within that age group saying they had texted while driving within the last month, surpassing the national average by a whopping 6 percent. The findings were substantiated by a separate study which observed drivers at intersections across the city. Researchers watched as many as 200 motorists at a single intersection driving while using a handheld electronic device. This could mean the chances of motorists suffering Car Accident Injuries caused by distracted driving is significantly higher than national averages, considering the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says distracted driving claimed more than 5,000 lives and injured approximately 448,000 others in 2009 alone. The Car Accident Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices ask that we each do our part to protect our own lives, as well as the lives of motorists around us, by putting the phone down while driving.
