Rochester Receives $17.7 Million Grant to Improve Defective Highway Design

September 13, 2013 The Car Accident Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices explain that each year, a number of New York motor vehicle collisions are attributed faulty highway designs. In fact, studies have shown that as many as 22,000 highway fatalities in the United States each year list a problem with the highway as a contributing factor. In an effort to improve infrastructure and reduce crash numbers in Rochester, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced it has issued a $17.7 million grant to the city to break ground on projects to upgrade roadways. The funding is being provided through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) 2013 discretionary grant program. The project will convert an underused, high-speed expressway to a low-speed city street for numerous homes and businesses. Experts say that eliminating the eight to 12 lanes of highway and trading them for a two lane street will not only promote economic growth and expansion in the area, but will also reduce accidents by slowing vehicles down. Officials add the new design will prove to be friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists as well. William Mattar Law Offices’ team of Personal Injury Lawyers recognizes the benefits this project will yield to the community. The firm is hopeful the project’s completion is successful in reducing the number of auto accidents around Rochester.
