Nov. 12, 2012 Car accidents are the greatest danger to the lives of children in the United States today. In fact, experts say they are the leading cause of death for children ages 14 and under. The best way to prevent these accidents are for children to buckle up—statistics show children wearing seat belts in the back seat of a vehicle are 38 percent less likely to be seriously injured in the event of a crash. In an effort to reduce the number of children hurt in New York car crashes, including Buffalo car accident injuries, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee is promoting a poster contest for children in third through seventh grades. A press release announcing the contest stated that participants must create an original piece of art that expresses the importance of the agency’s Sit-Click-Ride campaign. All entries will be judged based on, “positive approach, accuracy, effectiveness, originality and appearance.” Prizes offered for the best pieces of artwork will include an iPod, a Kindle reader, a Nook reader, and trophies.
