Phone Manufacturer Working to Prevent Distracted Driving Accidents With New Software

November 4, 2013 Distracted driving is becoming one of the leading causes of fatal motor vehicle accidents today. The New York Car Accident Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices point out that as many as 10 percent of accidents are attributed to drivers failing to pay attention to their surroundings while driving. Handheld electronic devices, such as cellphones, tend to be one of the most common distractions in vehicles. Microsoft is working to combat this problem by creating software aimed at preventing drivers from becoming distracted. An article from the New York Daily News explains the software works by placing phones into a “driving mode” when the devices are inside moving vehicles. When under these settings, all calls and texts are automatically silenced, allowing motorists to focus on the road. Any device equipped with the software can have the driving mode activated automatically by connecting it via Bluetooth. While the driving mode will effectively prevent distraction from incoming texts and calls, it cannot prevent motorists from sending a text or call. William Mattar’s New York Personal Injury Lawyers say making the public more aware of the dangers that distracted driving presents is important to help prevent future accidents. Being a good example to others by always putting your phone down while driving is one of the best ways to help achieve this goal.
