February 24, 2014 New technology is constantly being developed to reduce the chances of car accidents. One of the newest developments in the field is the ability for vehicles to communicate with one another and the infrastructure around them to create a safer driving experience. Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication allows data to be transferred wirelessly from a vehicle to other transmitters on vehicles and traffic control devices so that warnings can be issued to drivers when accidents are imminent. Data regarding speed, road position, and surroundings is used to issue drivers warnings through vibrations or alarms in the vehicle. While most people would agree sharing the information should be used in order to save lives, some believe the sharing of data from vehicles should be restricted in order to prevent car manufacturers from using the information for profit. WKTV News says New York Senator Charles Schumer is leading a movement to regulate vehicle data collection on the grounds car manufacturers are allegedly selling information from consumers’ vehicles to third party vendors without the knowledge or consent of owners. He is asking federal officials to require car manufacturers to notify drivers when data from their vehicle is being collected and allowing owners an opportunity to completely opt out of vehicle data collection. The Car Accident Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices are hopeful a compromise can be reached so that both vehicle safety and personal privacy can be achieved.
