May 6, 2013 Syracuse has several college campuses in the area, and it comes as no surprise that the region has a large number of citizens who commute on bicycles. In fact, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) reports that around 25 percent of all students ride bikes to class. This high number of commuters on bicycles has been accompanied by an increased number of Syracuse Bicycle Accidents though. Data indicates that there were 95 crashes involving a bicycle in the Syracuse area in 2012. In an effort to keep this number to a minimum while also promoting others to bike throughout town, a Bicycle Safety Committee has been established on the SUNY-ESF campus. According to an article from The Daily Orange, the committee intends to achieve these goals by working with city officials to improve the city’s highway infrastructure to make it friendlier to bicyclists. Some of the changes include removing curbs and installing bicycle lanes. Other events will be held during orientations to focus on educating students about the importance of practicing safety techniques when riding, such as always wearing a helmet.
