December 9, 2013 Each year, a high number of accidents between bicycles and motor vehicles occur resulting in deaths and injuries. In fact, data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and National Safety Council shows that an estimated 38,000 injuries were associated with bicycle accidents in 2011, costing taxpayers roughly $4 billion. The New York Bicycle Accident Lawyers with William Mattar Law Offices explain that wearing bicycle helmets can significantly reduce the chances of injuries. That's why the NHTSA is working to raise awareness on the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike. The agency has issued a Press Release discussing the subject and how having a helmet that fits properly is just as important as using this piece of safety gear. Their experts say the helmet should sit level on the head and low on the forehead, while the chinstrap should fit snug. The side straps of the helmet should also come to a “V” slightly beneath and in front of the ears. After learning to properly fit a helmet, the NHTSA is asking cyclists to become “Roll Models” by teaching others the importance of helmets and how to properly fit them. William Mattar’s team of New York Personal Injury Lawyers applauds the efforts made to reduce bicycle accident injuries, and they are hopeful the programs are a success!
