The numbers are especially disturbing in New York, where 11,672 truck crashes were recorded by the New York Department of Highway Safety in 2010 alone. Experts say a 20 percent rise in the number of tractor-trailers on the road is likely by 2020, with a relative increase in the number of fatal and serious accidents involving these vehicles expected as well. An article from WGRZ 2 News touched on one of the recent tragedies caused by a tractor-trailer accident. The crash happened at around 1 p.m. on Oct. 13 along Transit Road. Reports show an Amherst couple was traveling northbound on the road in a van when a tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction suddenly veered into their lane and struck their vehicle head-on, coming to rest after striking several buildings. Both passengers of the van were killed instantly as a result of the impact from the Buffalo Truck Accident. Investigators are currently examining the truck driver’s log books, inspecting the truck for mechanical failures, and have taken a blood sample from the driver to determine what contributing factors may have led to the crash.
