If you’re uninjured or have only minor injuries, get off the road as quickly as possible. If you think you broke a bone, however, keep it still.
Call 911 and ask the dispatcher to send police and, if necessary, paramedics or an ambulance.
Take photographs. Talk to witnesses and others involved in the accident. Get names, numbers, and insurance information. Note in writing any statements made.
Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. See a doctor. And talk with an experienced lawyer. At WIlliam Mattar, we’ll review your case for free and advise you what to do next.
A bicycle accident lawyer, like a car accident lawyer, talks with you about the crash and tells you if you have a case. We don't charge for this initial consultation. You never pay us out of your own pocket, in fact, because our motto is “No Fee Until We Win.”
Investigations can begin during the analysis phase, when the lawyer advising you if you have a case starts weighing evidence helpful in that determination. Upon starting work on your case, the lawyer—now your attorney—gathers, organizes, and assesses police reports and medical and insurance records.
In this phase, your bicycle accident attorney presents evidence as proof of liability and damages, deals with health, disability, or workers' compensation insurers, and negotiates a settlement with the insurance adjuster or defense attorney.

In 2020, there were 932 fatal bicycle accidents, up from 856 the year before, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show 130,000 people annually are injured in cycling accidents in the United States.
Five common causes of bike accidents are
• distracted cycling;
• tailgating, in which a bicyclist follows a vehicle too closely;
• ignoring traffic signs and signals;
• weaving through traffic; and
• turning without looking.
Most cycling accidents happen in urban areas, where about three in four crashes occur, according to the National Safety Council.
A bicycle accident attorney does the dirty work—the stuff you’d rather not do, such as talking to insurers. Also, an attorney can tell you what to expect and what needs to be done and by when. And an attorney knows how to investigate a case, advocate for you to receive maximum compensation, and protect your rights.
